How the price is calculated

Target margin

price = (cost + packaging + fixed fees) ÷ (1 − fee % − margin %)

Markup on cost

price = (cost + packaging) × (1 + markup %)

Both

profit = price − cost − packaging − fixed fees − fee % × pricebreak-even = (cost + packaging + fixed fees) ÷ (1 − fee %)

Worked example

A print costs $7.25 to make, including your time, and packaging adds $0.75. The marketplace and payment fees come to 10% plus $0.30 per order. For a 40% margin after fees:

ItemAmount
Selling price$16.60
Your costs$8.00
Fees (10% + $0.30)$1.96
Profit$6.64 (40%)
Break-even price$9.22

Get the cost from the 3D print cost calculator in Advanced mode so your time and failed prints are included.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I charge for a 3D print?

Start from your full cost, including your time, then add fees and the profit you want. Many sellers end up at two to four times their filament and electricity cost. Compare with similar items before you settle on a price.

What is the difference between margin and markup?

Markup is added on top of your cost: a 100% markup doubles it. Margin is the share of the selling price you keep as profit: a 40% margin means $4 of every $10 is profit. The same price gives a smaller margin number than markup number.

Which fees should I include?

Everything taken from the sale: marketplace commission, payment processing and any listing or transaction fee. Add the percentage fees together in one field and the fixed amounts in the other. Fees change, so check your platform's current rates.

What is the break-even price?

The lowest price that still pays for your costs and the fees. Below it, every order loses money.
